House Wren Nesting

I'd given up hope, but there is a house wren that is trying to nest in my nest box. He's missing a tail (any ideas?), but there was a female around earlier in the day, and they've both put sticks in the box. Anyway, he was singing constantly today, and I got some good pictures.

  1. Kind of amazing to see a healthy looking bird with no tail! Predator maybe? I'm stumped. Let us know if it grows back.

  2. I was hoping you could help me out. I'm new to bird watching. My girlfriend is really into it and I've been trying to become more knowledgeable about the subject. I was hoping you could tell me what kind of binoculars you use for watching? Or do you just rely on your camera? I've been checking out the selection from The Sportsman's Guide's optics section on their binoculars page. I wanted to know if you had any suggestions on a better dealer, and which brand you have come to prefer, and what I should expect to spend on a solid pair. Thanks in advance!

    1. I apologize since this is probably too late, but here's the advice I would have given you: I've owned two pairs of Bushnells, one about $60 and the other $130, and I think around $140 is the price to expect to get a decent pair of starter binoculars. Of course its possible to spend $600-$1800 on binoculars, but I've never looked through any in that price range and couldn't say if they're worth it. I would recommend going to the website Birdforum. You can get expert advice from its thousands of members on any topic at all related to birding. Good luck!
